Wisconsin, serves as an innovation hub working with UW Health System and UW School of Medicine and Public Health innovators, including faculty physicians, scientists, residents, science trainees, nurses, and staff, to bring innovative healthcare solutions to market.

What makes a good Stage 1 project?

1. An idea that is well-formed enough it can be described to others

  • Idea of where it fits in the healthcare system
  • Potential value proposition identified

2. Innovator (or delegate) willing to spend time with Isthmus Project staff to design and engage in feedback sessions and expert interviews

Once an idea has reached the stage where a clinical or business use case can be described, there is still much to be done to validate if the idea is credible.

  • End user feedback (look, feel, functionality, user interface)
  • System/Implementation feedback (workflow considerations, infrastructure required to support)
  • Financial Considerations (pricing thresholds, reimbursement strategy, cost savings potential)
  • Supply Chain (purchasing channels, new product adoption protocols)

All this expertise exists at UWH/SMPH and can be facilitated through Isthmus Project.

What makes a good Stage 2 project?

  1. Product, Prototype or Minimum Viable Product (MVP) ready for use in a healthcare setting
  2. Innovator or delegate available to with Isthmus Project staff on design of pilot
  3. Champion within UWH to lead product test
  4. Willingness to share equity, revenue or intellectual property with Isthmus Project in exchange for product trials efforts

Stage 2: Prototype evaluation

Once an idea has reached credibility as a prototype it must be tested thoroughly in an end-user setting to establish clinical/advanced data in order to bring to market.

  • Establish metrics for evaluation (user feedback, time saved, length of stay, cost savings, workflow improvement, etc.)

  • Work with Clinical Research Office as necessary to build pilots or trials

  • Evaluate pilot experience and help innovator position new data for go-to-market strategy

All this expertise exists at UWH/SMPH and can be facilitated through Isthmus Project.
